How do we proceed?

Introduction & intake

We begin with a personal introductory meeting. During this consultation, we'll listen to your wishes and needs, discuss your dental health, and take photos or x-rays if necessary. This gives us a complete picture of your situation.

Customized treatment plan

Based on the intake, we'll create a treatment plan tailored to your specific situation. Whether it involves regular checkups, preventive care, cosmetic treatments, or more complex procedures, we'll clearly explain the steps involved, what you can expect, and how long the process will take.

Implementation & aftercare

What is an inlay or onlay?

An inlay is a custom-made filling for damaged teeth. It fills the space after decay is removed and fits perfectly with your teeth. An onlay is also an option; this also covers one or more cusps of the tooth, making it more suitable for more extensive damage. Inlays and onlays are often used as alternatives to standard fillings and crowns. The material used can vary, such as ceramic, gold, or a composite inlay. Anything is possible, and the best choice is made based on your specific situation and wishes.

When is an inlay suitable?

Your dentist may recommend an inlay for:

  • Medium-sized cavities or damage to your teeth or molars
  • A standard filling is not strong enough
  • You would like to keep as many of your own teeth as possible
  • You want an aesthetically pleasing finish

How does placing an inlay work?

Placing an inlay or onlay is a multi-step process. We'll guide you through every step. During the intake, we'll also discuss all the next steps with you, so you know what to expect.

  1. Intake: your wishes are discussed, X-rays are taken, and we draw up your personal treatment plan.
  2. Preparation: The affected part of your tooth is removed and the tooth is minimally ground down.
  3. Inlays and onlays are made in our own laboratory: perfectly fitted to your teeth and completely tailored to your wishes. If necessary, you'll receive a temporary filling to protect your teeth in the meantime.
  4. Placement: Your final, custom-made inlay or onlay is placed and securely fastened.

Maintenance and service life

Thanks to the use of high-quality materials in our laboratory and the fact that we tailor the inlay to your teeth perfectly, you can enjoy it for a long time. On average, an inlay or onlay lasts 10 to 15 years. Good oral care is crucial. Here are some tips for long-lasting results:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day
  • Use special brushes and/or dental floss to clean between and under the inlays
  • Avoid extremely hard food and nail biting
  • Visit your dentist regularly

 

Costs and reimbursement of inlays

How much does an inlay cost at the dentist? This price depends heavily on the material, the size of the damaged area in the tooth, and the complexity of the treatment. On average, the cost is around €350 to €750 per tooth, but this can vary depending on your specific situation. Our specialist will always discuss the costs with you during the consultation and when developing the treatment plan. This way, you won't encounter any surprises.

It's possible that (part of) the costs are covered by supplementary dental insurance. Always check with your health insurer.

How does the intake process proceed?

Interview

During an intake appointment, the dentist (specialist) will examine the condition of your teeth. We use the latest techniques for this. We'll let you observe and discuss the options together. Naturally, we'll also assess your expectations.

Treatment plan / Budget

We create a customized treatment plan with an accompanying budget and, if necessary, propose various solutions. If authorization from your health insurer is required, we can also arrange that for you.

Planning and starting treatment

After you've approved the budget, we'll create a schedule. It's important that all appointments are scheduled in the correct order with the right practitioner. We'll also ask about your preferred days and times. After scheduling, we look forward to starting your treatment!

Alongside his career in motorsport, Jack has always been active as a dental implantologist. He studied dentistry in Amsterdam and obtained his PhD in 1992 at the then KU Nijmegen based on research into the treatment effects of immediate overdentures and conventional immediate dentures. CDC knows Jack from the past, where he enjoyed working with the team back then. As of October 1, 2025, he is making his return to CDC as Chief of Clinic. Giulio studied Dentistry in Madrid and graduated from the University Alfonso X El Sabio in 2015. After a short work experience, Giulio moved to the Netherlands and gained five years of work experience. Giulio also further specialized in Endodontics, Aesthetic Dentistry, Prosthetics and Surgery. Giulio works 50% at CDC and 50% in a Clinic in Lombardy (Italy).

Karen has been a dentist at CDC since 2001. After graduating from Utrecht University, she established her own practice in Zeist and later in Rotterdam. Her specialty is cosmetic/aesthetic dentistry. Joana comes from Portugal, where she successfully completed her university dental training. In 2021, Joana moved to the Netherlands with her boyfriend and has enjoyed working at CDC for years now. My colleagues from the laboratory also come into the room to see how the crowns or veneers look on the patient. Before we finally place any work, we can still make adjustments. During his first years at CDC, he completed his dental technology degree at the DHTA in Utrecht. He's now been working at CDC for twelve years and has enjoyed working as the laboratory manager for the past four years. Four years ago, Coen successfully completed his Dentistry degree at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences. This allows him to maintain interaction with patients, which he truly enjoys.

What is better: an inlay or a crown?

This depends primarily on the amount of tooth tissue that can be preserved. An inlay is ideal when the tooth is still largely intact, as it is less invasive and preserves more natural tooth structure. A crown is recommended if the tooth is already weakened or requires a full cap.

How long does an inlay or onlay last?

The average lifespan of an inlay or onlay is 10 to 15 years, but good oral hygiene is necessary for this.

Is placing an inlay painful?

No, the treatment is performed under local anesthesia and is therefore often virtually painless.

What is the difference between a composite inlay and ceramic?

A composite inlay is more affordable and quicker to make. When ceramic is used, the inlay is often more wear-resistant and retains its color longer.
