The most important information at a glance
Good brushing technique seems obvious, but small mistakes can have major consequences for your teeth. With the right instructions, you can keep your teeth and gums healthy and prevent problems.
How often and how long should you brush your teeth?
The basic rule for brushing your teeth is at least twice a day, often in the morning and evening. Sometimes it's recommended to do this more often, for example, if you have braces or sensitive gums. But how long should you brush your teeth? The rule of thumb is two minutes each time. This also depends on your situation. Brushing with an electric toothbrush is often more effective than brushing by hand.
Our dentists and dental hygienists are happy to discuss your needs and advise you on what is best for your teeth.
How to brush your teeth?
To brush your teeth, it's best to use a toothbrush with a soft bristles. Use small, circular motions. Brush systematically: the outside, the inside, the chewing surfaces—get everything. Don't forget your gum line. When brushing with an electric toothbrush, it's important to let the brush do the work. Don't apply pressure and gently place it on your teeth. There are also a few specific situations that require some further explanation:
- Brushing instructions with braces (electric): use a special brace brush or an attachment for your electric toothbrush to clean well around the brackets and wires.
- Brushing instructions for adults and seniors: Customized advice may be necessary based on your age, tooth wear, and gum health.
Eating and brushing teeth
How long can you avoid eating after brushing your teeth? It's best not to eat or drink immediately after brushing your teeth, so the fluoride in the toothpaste works best. If you still want to have something to eat, choose water.
The order of brushing is also important. Technically, brushing your teeth before breakfast is better for your teeth. But the damage to your teeth is very minimal, so it doesn't really matter. Do you drink a lot of fruit juice or use a very abrasive toothpaste? Then it's probably better to brush your teeth before breakfast. You can also wait 30 minutes before brushing. Brushing immediately after acid can wear down the enamel faster. This way, you optimally protect your teeth.
